Maclean’s Magazine App Reviews

The new version is terrible

Hate the new app. Constantly loses my place in the magazine. Hard to navigate back. Doesn’t work offline. Change it back, please.

A Canadian Embarrassment

The app wont open! It is quite sad that Macleans (or anyone) would launch an app that doesnt work. I agree with the previous comment about whether anyone tests or approves the release. Poor oversight and management. Someone should lose their job for this.

Latest version us Crap!

Latest version is crap! No navigation in the magazine. No table of contents. Issues no longer download in background automatically. Does anyone test these things before releasing?

Remove old issues

How do you delete old issues from your iPad now? Not very intuitive!

Awful Update

I truly hate this new version. I no longer seem to be able to download full versions of the magazine, for which I have a paid subscription. Instead, I get a few pages pre-loaded, then the rest loads as I read. This is incredibly frustrating, as I spend a lot of time flying and offline. I no longer have access to the full magazine while offline, which has totally put me off and will likely result in my not renewing my subscription.

Cant send articles

The ability to send the articles to myself or others is gone. Please fix!

Crashes on opening

Cant open at all! Sooooooo frustrating! When are you going to fix it? I havent been able to see my magazine in a month!

Fixed

Its working again. Perfect!!!

Sad

Worked ok before " upgrade".... now crashes every time it is launched. Huge app too! Get some coding help!

DO NOT load if you want to read off line

The reason I subscribe is so I can read it off line while travelling. New app does not allow off line reading. Buggy app as well.

New format but not better

More content but no matter where you leave off, when you reload they force you back to the most current magazine and the new topics of the day. At least with the old version if you left off on page 20, when you opened it back up you were on page 20. You are now forced to back into your library, select the issue you were on, then flip through the pages until you find where you left off...if you can remember.

Still useless despite some improvements

At least I can download to read offline but with no bookmarks I can never tell where I am up to, what issue and what page. The previous version was much better, what imbecile in management thought this was an improvement?

Disappointed

The good it does not crash. It very clumsy does not book mark your spot or issue. Even once open and returning it is remembering where you are. The older versions were simpler and functional. Hard to believe that this the how Macleans is hoping to go forward

Universal, sort of.

The app works ok, but I find it a bit annoying that the iPad app doesnt do landscape.

Decent

This new version has been nothing but a headache. I want a magazine to read within my iPad , no extra features required.

Buggy but reasonably pretty

The offline feature is, to be charitable, buggy. On each of two flights Ive been able to read only a few pages before it crashes and loses the offline magazine. When you have an Internet connection it works well. The addition of the newest stories (separate from the magazine) is nice, probably makes sense, but then the offline feature should extend to that as well. Looks nice but its clumsy and buggy.

only improvement, offline magazine reading

The title says it all. It doesnt keep when you are taking a pause of reading. It should all be about being a magazine on an ipad. I want weekly news format and not daily updates. There are a nuisance. The magazine should be put forward.

Annoying

Like the other posters I find the lack of bookmarking annoying. Also, I wish I could turn off the Macleans daily option. I see the articles in my Facebook feed anyway, and when I go to the app, I want to read the magazine I am paying for. Finally, I am really unhappy that I can no longer email my favorite articles to my husband! It was so convenient to share them that way. I guess I could go find the hard copy and bookmark it for him but its too much of a hassle.

Getting worse with each update.....

Why do magazines keep trying to build a video game? At some point the producers need to realize we read Macleans for the content, not for "features" in the app of dubious value. A magazine should be simple format. A hint is if you need a page explaining how to use the magazine, youve over thought it. Please get back to publishing stories, or allow it back into Zinio where it was easy to use. Letting my subscription run out.....

Frustrating!!

Every update to the app results in difficulty getting access to your issues again. My issues available have been cutoff at November 2015 (been faithful subscriber since the 70s). And now as noted by others there is no hold/bookmark available where you left off. The whole app reloads advising an update is available. One must then go through the menu navigating to where you left off. To quote another "what imbecile thought this an improvement?"
